The Gottweig Abbey was built in 1083 and became a Benedictine Monastery 11 years later. Its current baroque design was reconstructed in early 18th century, after the monastery burnt down in fire. This abbey is still an active monastery run by 45 monks. Tourists are drown to this abbey for its magnificent church and museum, in particular the monumental staircase with a ceiling fresco from 1739 — one of the largest and most beautiful baroque staircases in Europe. Visitors can also visit the permanent exhibit of “the monastic life” as well as the abbey library with important collection of religious engravings, coins, antiquities and musical manuscripts. Exterior of the monastery is just as wonderful with the views of the unspoiled landscape of the Wachau Valley.
