About Lorsch
Although small in size, Lorsch Abbey has a great historical importance as it was a center of power, spirituality and culture in the Holy Roman Empire until well into the High Middle Ages. This abbey might be the smallest UNESCO heritage site in Europe but it abounds in well-preserved sculptures and paintings from the eight century when it was founded and the gatehouse contains some fine Carolingian frescoes. There are explanatory displays on the path so the walk through the site is very informative.
