It took ten years to built the colossal Museum of the Great War of Redipuglia, which is, to the day, is the largest World War I shrine in all of Italy and one of the most impressive war memorials in whole of Europe. It was opened in 1938 and it houses the remains of 100,000 soldiers who perished in battle. Taking up a whole hillside, the memorial site features a museum displaying well-preserved artifacts and war relics, the majestic tombs of generals as well as the tombs honoring the unnamed men buried here. This enormous monument is a peaceful, yet moving and overwhelming setting well worth contemplating.
