About St. Gallen

High quality hoto of St. Gallen - Switzerland

St. Gallen Abbey was an important monastery since the 8th century. It actually started as a humble hermitage founded by the Irish missionary monk Gallus in 612, but soon became one of the most significant cultural centers in Europe. Upon entering in this large Benedictine convent visitors are usually overwhelmed by the stunning rococo design in both, the cathedral and the library. The abbey’s library is considered the treasure trove among the medieval libraries in the world containing more than 160,000 books out of which 2100 are handwritten. Take some time and visit St. Gallen’s Old Town which is fully pedestrianized, making it easy for visitors to enjoy the beautiful architecture of half-timbered houses adorned with turrets and colorful windows.
