Quality photo of Speyer - Germany

Speyer
Germany

75 min

Speyer is worth exploring and makes an interesting day trip destination for so many reasons. The two most notable highlights are the Cathedral of St.Mary... and St. Stephen, the first and largest consistently vaulted church in Europe and the Speyer Technik Museum. The Cathedral represents, in historical, artistic and architectural sense, one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in Europe and its four towers and two domes dominate the town of Speyer. This giant church was the burial place of the German kings for almost 300 years. In the square in front of the cathedral’s main portal is an enormous stone bowl with a capacity of 1,560 liters that every new bishop had to fill with wine as a gift to the people. Nothing less impressive is the Technik Museum that features the biggest Space Exhibition in Europe and an extremely rare Buran Space Shuttle, developed during the 1980s.

Schwetzingen Castle
Germany

75 min

While the Schwetzingen Castle may seem a bit simple judging by its exteriors, the gardens are pretty spectacular, full of colorful blooms, lush green plants... and gorgeous water fountains. The gardens are separated into carefully maintained sections and boast in numerous artistic sculptures, flowerbeds and geometric clipped hedges. The most peculiar garden’s sights are the pink mosque featuring two elegant minarets, temples to the Greek gods, and the Bath House. The most peculiar part of the castle is a charming theater built in rococo style.

Maulbronn
Germany

This peaceful and inspiring monastery is a breath of history that will most certainly bewitch every visitor. As you move through the complex, you can... vividly experience how people lived there centuries ago. The serene ambiance is only interrupted from time to time by the sounds of students as there is still an active school attached to this monastery, the same school that was once attended by Friedrich Holderlin and Hermann Hesse. As for the architectural structure Maulbronn is considered the most complete and best-preserved medieval monastic complex north of the Alps.

Lorsch
Germany

60 min

Although small in size, Lorsch Abbey has a great historical importance as it was a center of power, spirituality and culture in the Holy Roman... Empire until well into the High Middle Ages. This abbey might be the smallest UNESCO heritage site in Europe but it abounds in well-preserved sculptures and paintings from the eight century when it was founded and the gatehouse contains some fine Carolingian frescoes. There are explanatory displays on the path so the walk through the site is very informative.

Heidelberg is equally appreciated by its residents and as well as visitors for the world-renowned beauty and idyllic setting on the river Neckar. Heidelberg is... also famous for its baroque Old Town with elegant churches, museums and charming alleyways. What mostly attracts visitors is the red-sandstone Heidelberg Castle but also the lively student atmosphere (Heidelberg is also Germany’s oldest university), beautiful riverside location and town’s rich history. All in all, Heidelberg is a town where landscape, history and culture and come together in a harmonic symbiosis.
