Italy

The dazzling church of San Giacomo, located above Ortisei, near the village of S. Giacomo, can only be reached on foot. Perhaps for this reason... the church is consecrated to St. Jacob, the patron saint of hikers and pilgrims. It takes approximately an hour from Ortisei and those who make the effort and rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes of valley and Dolomites in the background. Of particular artistic value are the Gothic frescoes in the church interior, which date back to the late 15th century. The 16th century altar, richly carved is also very precious.

The impressive castle stands above Ponte Gardena and an approximately 25 minute’s hike takes you to this magnificent estate but it’s very much worth the... climb. The grounds and astonishing exterior are free of charge and paid guided tours are organized for the interiors where visitors can admire a number of rooms from the 16th and 17th centuries as well as the exhibition rooms with 86 models of South Tyrolean castles handmade by Ludwig Mitterdorfer.

Sabiona Monastery is the spiritual center of the entire Tyrol region because of its archaeological, historical and artistic importance. Dating back to the 6th century... Sabiona monastery on the Holy Mountain is one of the oldest pilgrimage places in Tyrol. From 1687 Benedictine nuns live in this splendid monastery and therefore the monastery is not accessible for visitors. However, three churches and a chapel are open to the public. There are some archaeological discoveries proving that Christian religion was spread precisely from this place all over South Tyrol.
