The castle was in ruins until the mid-20th century when a military practice field was established here. Finally, after the systematic archaeological excavations between 1962 and 1966, the restoration of the site was conducted so today the castle walls are fortified and the Old Tower with exhibition rooms is refurbished. The visitors can learn all about the interesting castle history by watching a 10-minute, 3D movie screened every hour.

The town of Gyongyos was built in attractive natural surroundings, at the gateway to the Matra Mountains. Other points of interest are the Matra Museum that provides an insight on local history and hunting (there’s even a mammoth skeleton!) and the Art Deco synagogue.
