Located on the top of Monte Figogna Shrine of Nostra Signora della Guardia is a famous destination of pilgrims from Genoa and from and all... over Italy. According the tradition it was originally built as a modest wooden chapel by a peasant named Benedetto Pareto in 1490. The Virgin Mary appeared to him and asked him to build a chapel on the mountain. But, being only a poor man he was afraid he would not be able to do that. Few days passed, he fell from a tree and suffered from serious injuries. But Virgin Mary miraculously healed him so he started spreading the news about this event and start building the chapel with the help of the villagers. During the following years, the number of pilgrims grew rapidly and between 1528 and 1530 news shrine was built. In 1903 the old church was demolished a completely new shrine had to be built to accommodate countless pilgrims visiting the shrine every year.
