The Miedzyrzecz Fortified Region is a unique fortification system of around 100 concrete defense structures and underground tunnels. It was built between the 1st and... the 2nd World War, and then additionally extended during the World War II with a purpose to protect eastern Germany border from Soviet offensive. The total length of 30 km at a depth of 40 m featured railway stations, workshops, engine rooms and barracks fitted with lighting system, ventilation, waterworks and sewage system. This advanced fortification system proved Nazi’s innovative technical solutions and it is still considered as one of the largest and the most interesting systems of its type in the world.
