Ottobeuren Abbey
Germany

This elaborate church has a fascinating history behind it, only for it to be tragically destroyed in the 18th century makeover. At the time, the... current abbot commissioned for new structures to be built in the then popular Late Baroque fashion. Even though the exterior is the main focus of this predominant style, it is also visible on the other side of the lavish walls in the form of the distinctive Rococo. Every Saturday the Abbey houses concert to accommodate its gorgeous appearance, featuring one of its two organs, with the older one being one of the most cherished in all of Europe.

The history of this beautiful castle goes way back to the 12th century when it was built by the Earls of Montfort and it remained... in their possession for 200 years. The castle then changed ownership to the mighty Habsburg family. In 1825, the state bought the castle and transformed it into a museum. The museum is divided into several different themed rooms over 3 floors that have been completely restored. Besides the museum, which exhibits everything from historical furniture to period dresses to weapons, the castle features also a restaurant for which advance reservations are recommended.

It houses one of the greatest libraries in Austria and the silver Tassilo chalice which was donated by the very man who founded the church. It is filled with all things Baroque – from vibrant frescoes to stunning tapestries sure to leave you at awe.

Mesocco Castle
Switzerland

The ruins of Mesocco Castle cover the entire top of a small mountain with its irregular pentagon walls. These walls proved unassailable as there were... many attempts to seize the castle in the past, but it was never conquered. The walls connect 5 towers and inside are the remains of the Church of St. Carpoforo. There is another church below the castle, the Church of Santa Maria al Castello, which was first mentioned in the 13th century. It is adorned with well-preserved Late Romanesque frescoes from the workshop of Seregnesi.
