Issogne Castle
Italy

75 min

This elegant Renaissance castle is situated on the right bank of the Dora Baltea, in the centre of the Alpine town of Issogne. The first... documentation of the Issogne Castle dates from the mid 12th century but it reached the zenith of splendor throughout the 15th and 16th centuries when George of Challant transformed it into a magnificent residence. At the very entrance visitors are welcomed by the famous wrought-iron pomegranate tree fountain, which is, along with the superb frescoes on the portico, of an extraordinary expressive value. There is so much for visitors to discover here: from the ground floor dining room and kitchen, the first floor chapel with decorated arch vaults and Gothic altar, and the second floor rooms with beautifully covered ceilings and furniture of that time.

The 13th century Basilica di Sant’Andrea is considered an architectural masterpiece in its own right, embellished with a unique façade made from several types of stone. The church’s inside is no exception, with a Lombard fresco depicting the funeral of abbot Thomas Gallus as well as a painted crucifix. Verres Castle
Italy

The uniqueness of the Verrès Castle lies in its construction because it is considered one of the first examples of a single structure castle, rather... than the more common castle design consisting of series of buildings. That’s the reason why its exteriors seem quite simple and serious and lack the usual opulence that pop into our mind when we think of castles. Interiors, however, are completely contrasting the sever outsides. The majestic staircase, arches, decoration of the windows, doors and colossal fireplaces will exceed all expectations.

And after all those worldly structures, tourists can enjoy a 19th century cathedral with many marvelous artwork and an awe worthy 5-6th century baptistery.

With its ominous and sever look Fort Bard dominates the town of Bard and represents the most impressive example of military architecture. It was neglected... for many years but luckily restored and reopened for tourists in 2006. Today it attracts thousands of visitors a year. How unconquerable this fortress really is proves the fact that the castle’s garrison of 400 people was able to hold back 40,000 French troops for full 2 weeks. Besides the stunning views, visitors can learn more about the fortress through a guided tour and at the Museum of the Alps.
