The castle was founded in the 13th century but its most prominent owner, and the one who made it the splendid structure it is today,... is the Archduke Franz Ferdinand d'Este. He is responsible for remodeling the massive Gothic and Renaissance building and installing electricity, central heating, flush toilets and showers making it his ideal country residence. The castle can be discovered via four different guided tours, available in English as well, which reveal Franz Ferdinand's private apartments, his collections of antique furniture; Italian paintings; Gothic sculptures; hunting trophies and armory. Take a walk in the Rose Garden with beautiful Italian Renaissance statutes and enjoy the calming atmosphere where you might encounter free-roaming pheasants, peacocks and quails freely inhabiting the area.
