It is said that the lovely town of Kalocsa was founded in the year 1000 by the King Stephen the Saint. Today it is best... known for its historical buildings like St. Mary’s Cathedral and Archbishop’s Palace and for the production of exquisite paprika. Being situated in the midst of a fertile land Kalocsa has a long agricultural tradition which resulted in a long and successful production of paprika that in this town even has its own museum – the Paprika museum, located in the center of the town. Another great museum is The Karoly Viski Museum with the rich exhibition of coins, a collection of traditional costumes, a collection of ancient documents that reflect the history of the city, and a library of approximately 10,000 volumes.

Buso Museum
Hungary

The tale of this rather interesting tradition stems from the times the Ottomans occupied the area. People fled to the city of Mohacs to get... away from the invaders, until an old Sokac man had a marvelous idea of creating weapons and scary masks to defend themselves from the foreign doom. Their plan miraculously worked and the Turks fled the scene thinking they were being attacked by demons. Since their victory, the villagers have celebrated it annually every February. The Busosmuseum stands as a tribute to the bravery of the people, along with a beautiful mural, contemporary buso masks, photographs and folk costumes to give its visitors a unique sense of the dangerous times the clever and courageous people prevailed.

Brunszvik Castle
Hungary

Given that it takes only half an hour drive from Budapest, it is totally worth a detour from the motorway. The palace belonged to the... Brunszvik family and Ludwig van Beethoven was a close friend of the family and gave piano lessons to Brunsvik girls, thus spent considerable time there. That’s why today, within the Brunszvik manor house you will find a small Beethoven museum where you can explore some period musical instruments, music sheets and information on the Brunszvik family relationship with the composer. The extensive landscape park around the castle boasts of various trees such as white cypress, ginkgo, maple and plane trees but also a small pond and an island with an open-air stage where concerts dedicated to Beethoven are held.
