The very informative guided tour reveals all the amazing features of the impressive structure like the church choir, the royal tombs, the frescoes, 2 inner courtyards and monks' cells. There is also a small shop run by the monks selling a variety of home made products such as soap, oils and herbal treatments. The abbey is closed during lunch time, from 11:30-14:00.

The castle is located on a hill that dominates the port area and the historical center of the small village of Lerici. This small fisherman village was always a popular destination among artists, painters and writers like Byron and Shelley. This resulted in Lerici earning the title “the Poets' Bay”. Except for the splendid views owed to a magnificent location, the castle is also famous for its Geo-paleontological museum.

When it was first built, in 12th century, Rocca Sanvitale was just a humble tower, but after the extensions made by the Sanvitale family, it... became an extraordinary noble residence. The castle is accessed via a small bridge because it is completely surrounded by a deep water ditch. A guided tour is required to see the interior furnished with 16th, 17th and 18th century furnishings, antique armory and china. The most famous parts of the castle are the frescoes by Parmigianino and an optical chamber, where mirrors project a view of the town onto a wall.
