Monumental Castle Zbiroh is connected with many legends and secrets because in the past it was visited by European royalty; it was the Central European... Headquarters of the Freemasons at the beginning of the 20th century; and it was also the Nazi’s command center in 1938. Today visitors can tour the castle and learn about the history of the Knights Templar, they can also spend the night in Chateau Hotel Zbiroh. Another special treat is the chateau tavern U Rudolfovy kratochvíle where the waiters are fully attired in costumes and serve exquisite traditional Czech specialties. One of the famous guests that stayed several times in the Chateau Hotel was Czech artist Alphonse Mucha and to honor him the castle today houses a permanent exhibition of his work.

Of the two impressive fortresses, Žebrák is the elder dating from the later 13th century. But when Žebrák Castle burned down, in 1395, Wenceslas IV made decision to build a new royal chateau. Today Točník is a complex of the castle with uniquely preserved architectural elements, while the older castle remains in ruins, apart from its dominating Gothic tower.

Founded in 1348 by the Czech King and Roman Emperor Charles IV, it took twenty years to finish the castle since the emperor personally supervised the project in all details. Later, the castle was remodeled several times so late Gothic, Renaissance and neo-Gothic influences are obvious in its impressive architectural design. To access the castle visitors can walk (approximately 30 minutes from the parking lot) or even take a romantic carriage ride. The castle interiors can be explored via various guided tours available in English as well.
