Groznjan
Croatia

Groznjan is an ideal destination for one-day excursion. But don’t be fooled by its dimensions because if you happen to go there during summer months... you will see how this tiny and compact little town becomes a truly active artistic beehive – cultural manifestations, music academies, shows of popular artists, dance and drama workshops, festivals… such a busy schedule for such a small town! Even if you don’t go there during summer, the unique atmosphere of a medieval town, whose original beauty has been kept until today, can be felt simply by walking through the old town.

Motovun
Croatia

This captivating hilltop town that dominates over the valley of the Mirna River was built in 13th century. Although it changed various feudal masters during... its past, the Venetian influence remains the strongest. They ruled the town in the period 1278-1797. The oval main square, which is the only flat place in the whole town, is encircled by well preserved town walls from the 13th and 14th centuries and houses a colorful church. Town planning has well preserved all the characteristics of medieval architecture. Motovun is surrounded by vineyards thus it is also famous for exceptional Croatian wines, like Malvazija and Teran, as well as for the black truffle that can be found in this area. In Motovun as well as in the surrounding area there are many excellent local “konobe” and restaurants.

Grotta Gigante
Italy

Italian region Friuli-Venezia Giulia boasts in many interesting tourist sites but the cave Grotta Gigante is definitely one of the most fascinating. Due to its... exceptionally large dimensions (98.50 meters high, 76.30 meters wide and 167.60 meters long) it has entered in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1995 as the world’s largest tourist cave (this title was lost in 2010 with the opening of La Verna Cave in France). The cave has a breathtaking setting where you can admire the stalactites, stalagmites and other natural compounds formed over the past millions of years. The tour takes one hour and it includes 500 steps up and down, but the impressive beauty that waits for you in “the center of the earth” is well worth the effort.

Skocjan Caves is the amazing natural phenomenon of vast underground space filled with nice stalactite and stalagmites created by the River Reka. The limestone cave... system is 6.2 kilometers long and features also natural bridges, lakes, waterfalls, and gorges. Such a surprising natural diversity is simply awe-inspiring and is understandable that it is on UNESCO’s list of natural and cultural world heritage sites. The tour takes nearly 2 hours and is available in different languages. Please note that there are plenty of steps inside and some uphill bits during the tour. But it’s highly recommended because the scenery inside the caves is amazing, resembling surreal fairy tale landscapes.

Vrsar
Croatia

Overlooking the sea from a hill, Vrsar is an enchanting old fishing settlement offering its visitors a captivating glimpse to the past times. It is... enough just to walk through the old town inside the fortified walls and testify the great historical heritage – from the 13th century town’s gate that is still in use, to the remains of a 4th century basilica or the 12th century Romanesque basilica of St. Mary. In close vicinity of Vrsar there is another attraction to be seen: the sculpture park of the world renowned artist Dusan Dzamonja. The monumental abstract sculptures are placed in the natural background of Dzamonja's house and studio where he lived and worked for most of his life.

Porec
Croatia

Town of Porec is just one of many noteworthy sights in Istria but surely not the one to be missed. The narrow streets of Porec’s... old town are worth wandering for their own sake due to the Romanesque architecture, Venetian Gothic palaces and well preserved stone houses. The city main symbol is the 6th century Euphrasian Basilica where visitors can see a very interesting exhibition about the history of the church throughout the centuries, with beautiful mosaics and wooden sculptures.
