Places you can visit along the way

Quality photo of Kastav - Croatia

Kastav
Croatia

75 min

The quaint little town of Kastav is perfect escape from the turmoil of big cities and busy tourist places. It is quite small so you... will need not more than an hour or two to explore its treasures like the ruins of the Crekvina, The Church of the Holy Trinity and Lokvina square with fantastic views on the Kvarner bay. But do take some time to stroll through its charming narrow streets among old buildings to soak in the peaceful and cozy atmosphere. Kastav also has some top-notch restaurants so if you have some time, by all means, do try them. Kastav however gets rather busy during the international festivals like Kastav Cultural Summer, the Guitar Festival, and Kastav Blues Festival, so making reservation in a restaurant in advance is advisable.

Hum
Croatia

With barely 20 inhabitants but still featuring medieval city walls, a church, a 16th century watch tower and two small streets with three rows of... houses, Hum is defined as the smallest city in the world. Its history goes back in the earl medieval age and since then there was not much construction outside of the well preserved ancient walls. This city-monument is truly unique and interesting to history and culture explorers. It is also known as “the town of truffles” so we encourage you to try a leisurely meal at Hum's friendly konoba restaurant, the only eatery in the city.

Karlovac
Croatia

75 min

Karlovac is a city of many nicknames due to its natural and historic features. It is located on the confluence of rivers Kupa, Korana, Mreznica... and Dobra, hence the nickname “city on four rivers” where, consequently, kayaking and rafting are very popular. The Austrians founded Karlovac in 1579 when they built the fortified old town in the shape of a 6-pointed star, hence the nick name “the star”. Unfortunately, not much has left of these great defensive walls that were built to defend the city against the invading Ottoman Empire. But history buffs can still enjoy the 13th century Dubovac Castle, once inhabited by many noble families and army generals as well as the city museum. Finally, it is also known as the “city of beer” since one of Croatia's two most popular breweries, Karlovacko brewery, is located here.

Opatija
Croatia

Many things about Opatija are impressive. First is its long tourist tradition as a health resort that dates back to mid-19th century and the first... hotel ever built on Adriatic was in Opatija in 1884. All grand spa hotels in Opatija reflect its glorious days during the Austro-Hungarian Empire when it served as the most elegant seaside resort. Then it’s its 12 kilometers long promenade that was built along cost of Volosko, Opatija and Lovran. Opatija is also full of gorgeous parks and green areas perfect for relaxing. And finally, the numerous cultural and entertaining events all year round make Opatija a top spot destination.

Quality photo of Pazin - Croatia

Pazin
Croatia

75 min

Its position at the very centre of the Istrian peninsula makes Pazin easily accessible from the well-known tourist centers in Istria. The most impeccable image... of Pazin is perhaps that of its medieval castle rising above the 100 meters deep Pazin abyss. This chasm was the inspiration for Jules Verne’s “Mathias Sandorf” novel, hence today visitors can enjoy in the interactive show Escape from the Castle on conspirator Mathias Sandorf. This show provides an interesting insight into the past of this building. The castle is home to the Istrian Ethnographic Museum displaying 7500 ethnographic artifacts of textile, agricultural tools and objects of everyday life in Istrian villages.
