The tranquil, forested lake-shore of Lake Wolfgang along with some impressive cultural sites make Sankt Wolfgang a fine destination for a day trip. The charm... of this little town, recognized by many tourists during the summer season, lies in the breathtaking mountain setting and its pretty painted houses and shops that enclose the narrow cobbled streets. St. Wolfgang was a very famous pilgrimage center, even back in the 12th century, thanks to the Pilgrimage Church that features gorgeous altarpiece dating from 1481. Another great attraction in the town is the Mozarthaus.

The visit to the world’s biggest ice cave, Werfen Ice Caves, is truly a must. Ice palaces of surreal beauty, passageways and galleries all bear evocative names like “Diamond Kingdom” or “Ice Palace”. It is an elegant, relaxed village that offers a good base for walkers, hikers, sightseers and for water sports on the azure waters of Lake Wolfgangsee. There are two options to reach the mountain top, either taking a short cable car ride or walk the mountain trail from the village, which is well worth since the views from the top are spectacular.

The Hallein salt mine was dug by the ancient Celts over 2500 years ago and it was open for public 450 years ago for the... first time. But, what’s truly amazing about this mine is that it hasn’t lost any of its magical appeal to this day. Visitors enter the mine on a mine train and after the fun ride they can slide down one of the two miner’s slides to get to the amazing subterranean salt lake where they can take a silent boat ride. The tour of the mine is both fun and educational as visitors learn all about miners’ lives and the conditions they had to endure while working here.

Being located atop a hill, it can be reached on foot (approximately a 20 minutes’ walk) or by funicular. The castle has something for everyone – from different tours of the fortress, to a weapons exhibition, or a nice meal in castle tavern and a visit to the medieval shop. But the most exciting part that will most certainly thrill any visitor is the historic Falconry Center with daily bird of prey flying show and the first Austrian Falconry Museum. This legendary fortress was also utilized as filming location for the classic Hollywood movie Where Eagles Dare starring Clint Eastwood.
