Quality photo of Sankt Gilgen - Austria

Sankt Gilgen
Austria

75 min

Being located at only 29 kilometers from Salzburg and with its very scenic setting, Sankt Gilgen is the perfect day trip destination. The panorama of... Sankt Gilgen may seem familiar to many as it was here that the opening scenes of the movie “The Sound of Music” were filmed. It is an elegant, relaxed village that offers a good base for walkers, hikers, sightseers and for water sports on the azure waters of Lake Wolfgangsee. There are two options to reach the mountain top, either taking a short cable car ride or walk the mountain trail from the village, which is well worth since the views from the top are spectacular.

Sankt Wolfgang
Austria

The tranquil, forested lake-shore of Lake Wolfgang along with some impressive cultural sites make Sankt Wolfgang a fine destination for a day trip. The charm... of this little town, recognized by many tourists during the summer season, lies in the breathtaking mountain setting and its pretty painted houses and shops that enclose the narrow cobbled streets. St. Wolfgang was a very famous pilgrimage center, even back in the 12th century, thanks to the Pilgrimage Church that features gorgeous altarpiece dating from 1481. Another great attraction in the town is the Mozarthaus.

Mauthausen Memorial
Austria

75 min

The horrors of this place are probably best described by the harrowing nickname that Nazis gave to Mauthausen concentration camp: “the bone grinder”. It is... impossible to imagine the crimes that happened here. It was classified as a Grade III camp, which means that all inmates were to be exterminated through the exhaustion of the grueling labor. A minimum of 90.000 people died at the camp from exhaustion, illness, being shot and many prisoners committed suicide as the only way out of this hell. The preserved historic premises of the Mauthausen Memorial include the Wiener-Graben quarry, the Stairs of Death, the SS-Quarters, the Camp Prison, the Gas Chamber and the Museum with the Room of Names.

Bad Ischl
Austria

75 min

Bad Ischl is a work of art painted by a famous artist in real size. That’s the impression you will have once you visit Bad... Ischl. And that is probably the impression Emperor Franz Joseph had, given that he visited this town every year for his summer holidays until his death. Emperor presence can still be felt on every step – you’ll see portraits on the buildings, statue and emperor’s photographs in many cafes and restaurants. With its riverside location, colorful and graceful architecture and the beauty of the surrounding landscape, it is very easy to fall in love with this historic spa town.

Aggstein Castle
Austria

75 min

Step back in time and enjoy some superb views of the Danube River and the valley with abundant forests and rich vineyards. The ruins of... this twelfth century castle will transport you to the era of knights and battles of medieval times as you keep exploring the courtyards, stairs, tower, chapel and dungeon. Aggstein perhaps is not one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Wachau Valley but is considered by many as the most attractive.

Linz
Austria

Linz is definitely not incidentally a member of UNESCO's Creative Cities Network. Among numerous tourist attractions, the most outstanding are: Linzer Schloss (castle), which is... both a historical gem and the cultural hub of the city; Ars Electronica Center, an exciting high-tech museum; Martinskirche, one of Austria’s oldest churches; and Lentos Art Museum, an ultra-modernist building and home to contemporary art in Linz.
