The current appearance of this superb palace is the merit of Duke Francesco I d'Este who transformed the old medieval castle into a Ducal summer... residence in 1634. Palazzo Ducale is also known as “Delizia” (delight) for its architectural and decorative richness. Everything about this palace is impressive, but especially the rich 17th century frescoes by French artist Jean Boulanger and the magnificent Peschiera, a fish tank that resembles a ruined amphitheater. It takes about an hour to finish the well-informative guided tour.

Famous for its fascinating Romanesque and Gothic architecture and 14 towers (originally the town had 72 towers!), the town boasts in museums with Italian artworks of the 14th and 15 centuries. If time permits, head for one of San Gimignano's many restaurants as it is a great opportunity to try typical Tuscan home cooking. Heads up – although it’s a relatively small community, it can get quite busy during the peak travel season because it is one of the preferred tourist attractions.
