Sasso San Gottardo
Switzerland

105 min

Sasso San Gottardo offers not one but two unique experiences: a walk through the heart of the Alps and a visit to the military fortress... transformed into a museum. During World War II, the Swiss secretly excavated kilometers of tunnels high above the St. Gotthard pass where visitors today can ride an underground funicular and, besides the fortress, visit also the “World of Crystals” that displays lighted giant crystal formations. Warm clothes and comfortable shoes are recommended since the tunnels are cold and there are some stairs to climb.

A visit to Bellinzona provides a wonderful opportunity to understand the life of the nobility who lived here centuries ago. Along its picturesque alleys and... squares stand richly decorated patrician houses, beautiful churches and theaters. Yet, the most impressive sight of Ballinzona is the city’s triple fortification that was built first by the Romans and then extended in the Middle Ages by the Dukes of Lombardy. The oldest and mightiest castle of this fortification is the Castelgrande from where one may enjoy breathtaking views of the Old Town and surrounding area.

Devil's Bridge
Switzerland

The name speaks for itself meaning that this bridge was built under such challenging conditions that its completion was somewhat of a miracle. As the... legend says, it was so hard to build a bridge here that the mayor yelled in frustration “Then let the devil build a bridge!" The devil indeed offered to build the bridge at the cost of one soul of the first to cross it. But the villagers were cunning and sent a goat across the bridge. Angered by the trick, the devil tried to smash the bridge to pieces with a large stone but one old lady carved a cross in the bridge and thus the devil missed. The bridge is well worth visiting for the stupendous views on the primeval landscape full of power and energy.

Let your imagination take you back to another time as you visit the 13th century Castello Visconteo or the 15th century Santuario della Madonna del Sasso, located high above Locarno, in Orselina.

Siegwart brothers established Glasi Hergiswil glass factory in 1817 and today it is the only remaining glasswork in Switzerland where glass is still created by... hand. At one point it was almost closed due to the outdated equipment and technology, but thanks to the community efforts the business was maintained to present days. The museum is very informative and interactive, visitors can learn the history of glass making in Switzerland, observe glass being made in the factory, or even blow their own glass. There is also a glass labyrinth that is great fun. The museum was selected as one of the most beautiful museums in Europe in 1996 by the European Council.
