Pannonhalma Archabbey
Hungary

105 min

The Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma is one of the oldest historical monuments in Hungary, established in 966 by Prince Geza. The monastery became an archabbey... in 1541 but during the Turkish occupation the monks had to abandon the abbey on several occasions. The most notable sights include the Basilica with the Crypt which is also the oldest part of the abbey, dating from 13th century; the monumental library with 360.000 volumes; the Archabbey collection and the Baroque refectory. Visitors can also relax in the beautiful botanical garden, an incredible arboretum and in the winery and the restaurant. Today, there are about 50 monks living in the monastery who run the boarding school for Benedictine monks.

Gyor
Hungary

Gyor is a beautiful and charming town that hosts a vast array of architectural, cultural and natural treasures and has therefore received the European Award... for its contribution to the protection of historical heritage. The reminders of an eventful history can be seen in its well reconstructed Baroque center, full of narrow lanes, museums, palaces and churches. The Bishop's Cathedral on Kaptalan Hill, although beautiful from the outside, it’s more important for the fascinating sacred objects that it houses, among which the reliquary of Szent Laszlo I (St. Ladislaus I), king of Hungary who reigned between 1077 and 1095. Another church worth exploring is the 17th century Baroque Benedictine Church. The pride of the city is Becsi kapu ter (Vienna Gate Square), considered by many as the most delightful Baroque square in Hungary.

Quality photo of Franzensburg - Austria

Franzensburg
Austria

135 min

Unlike other castles, Franzensburg does not dominate its surroundings from hilltop, but it stands in the middle of a lake, thus to access it one... must take a short ferry ride. Franzensburg got its name from its creator, the Emperor Franz II, who in fact built this marvelous edifice as an imitation of medieval castle. Hard to believe, because it seems truly authentic with its dungeon, chapel and coronation room, which all can be viewed. This is all owing to the fact that original medieval architectural features, that today ornate the castle, were collected from monasteries and churches, palaces and town halls throughout the Empire.
