Steyr
Austria

75 min

Featuring a drawbridge, a castle (dating back to 980), tiny alleyways, rococo church towers, and two rivers, Steyr is a medieval fantasy. The town is... a real gem that attracts many visitors with its countless historic buildings and the gothic Bummerlhaus standing in the middle of the amazing square. Steyr is a lovely and peaceful town that pleasantly combines its wealthy history with nothing less impressive modern times (it is currently the Austrian headquarters of BMW).

Melk
Austria

105 min

The charming town of Melk with the gorgeous Abbey of Melk is a perfect one day trip that will for sure linger in your mind... for a long time. You can walk from one end of the town to the other and marvel some incredible architectural examples from many different history periods, ranging from the late Gothic period, Biedermeier, the Grunderzeit period and Art Nouveau. The town’s most impressive attraction is the Benedictine monastery that truly is a masterpiece with its colossal structure, refined details and contrasting colors. The monastery’s gems are its baroque church with lavish marble and frescoes; the Marmorsaal or the Marble banqueting hall; and the Abbey library which was an inspiration for Umberto Eco’s bestselling novel “The Name of the Rose”.

Situated on the southern bank of the River Danube and near the Vienna Woods, Klosterneuburg is a charming town and very popular among tourists. Wits... its rich cultural and leisure offer as well as the abundant high-end shopping facilities, it is a perfect day-trip from Vienna. The most renowned tourist attraction of Klosterneuburg is its Monastery, whose slogan is “Where heaven and Earth meet”. All visitors are enchanted by the beauty of the abbey church featuring the magnificent golden Verdun Altar. There are various guided tours visitors can take to explore its interiors including the wine tour, and given that this monastery has the oldest vineyard in Austria, we recommend you go for some free wine tasting in the cellars.

Mauthausen Memorial
Austria

75 min

The horrors of this place are probably best described by the harrowing nickname that Nazis gave to Mauthausen concentration camp: “the bone grinder”. It is... impossible to imagine the crimes that happened here. It was classified as a Grade III camp, which means that all inmates were to be exterminated through the exhaustion of the grueling labor. A minimum of 90.000 people died at the camp from exhaustion, illness, being shot and many prisoners committed suicide as the only way out of this hell. The preserved historic premises of the Mauthausen Memorial include the Wiener-Graben quarry, the Stairs of Death, the SS-Quarters, the Camp Prison, the Gas Chamber and the Museum with the Room of Names.

Quality photo of Durnstein - Austria

Durnstein
Austria

75 min

Durnstein town and surrounding village look like a live postcard – the landscape is marked with quiet hills with vineyards and forests that embrace the... walled town, and just beneath is the River Danube. Quite idyllic, wouldn’t you say? The Durstein castle was renowned due to one of its famous prisoners Richard I, also called “the Lionheart”. After the sightseeing, relax at one of the cozy taverns or shaded garden restaurants with a nice glass of excellent local wine.

Quality photo of Gottweig Abbey - Austria

Gottweig Abbey
Austria

75 min

The Gottweig Abbey was built in 1083 and became a Benedictine Monastery 11 years later. Its current baroque design was reconstructed in early 18th century,... after the monastery burnt down in fire. This abbey is still an active monastery run by 45 monks. Tourists are drown to this abbey for its magnificent church and museum, in particular the monumental staircase with a ceiling fresco from 1739 — one of the largest and most beautiful baroque staircases in Europe. Visitors can also visit the permanent exhibit of “the monastic life” as well as the abbey library with important collection of religious engravings, coins, antiquities and musical manuscripts. Exterior of the monastery is just as wonderful with the views of the unspoiled landscape of the Wachau Valley.
