But don’t be fooled by its dimensions because if you happen to go there during summer months... you will see how this tiny and compact little town becomes a truly active artistic beehive – cultural manifestations, music academies, shows of popular artists, dance and drama workshops, festivals… such a busy schedule for such a small town! Even if you don’t go there during summer, the unique atmosphere of a medieval town, whose original beauty has been kept until today, can be felt simply by walking through the old town.

With barely 20 inhabitants but still featuring medieval city walls, a church, a 16th century watch tower and two small streets with three rows of... houses, Hum is defined as the smallest city in the world. Its history goes back in the earl medieval age and since then there was not much construction outside of the well preserved ancient walls. This city-monument is truly unique and interesting to history and culture explorers. This captivating hilltop town that dominates over the valley of the Mirna River was built in 13th century. Although it changed various feudal masters during... its past, the Venetian influence remains the strongest. They ruled the town in the period 1278-1797. The oval main square, which is the only flat place in the whole town, is encircled by well preserved town walls from the 13th and 14th centuries and houses a colorful church. Town planning has well preserved all the characteristics of medieval architecture. Motovun is surrounded by vineyards thus it is also famous for exceptional Croatian wines, like Malvazija and Teran, as well as for the black truffle that can be found in this area. In Motovun as well as in the surrounding area there are many excellent local “konobe” and restaurants.

Karlovac
Croatia

75 min

Karlovac is a city of many nicknames due to its natural and historic features. It is located on the confluence of rivers Kupa, Korana, Mreznica... and Dobra, hence the nickname “city on four rivers” where, consequently, kayaking and rafting are very popular. The Austrians founded Karlovac in 1579 when they built the fortified old town in the shape of a 6-pointed star, hence the nick name “the star”. Unfortunately, not much has left of these great defensive walls that were built to defend the city against the invading Ottoman Empire. But history buffs can still enjoy the 13th century Dubovac Castle, once inhabited by many noble families and army generals as well as the city museum. Finally, it is also known as the “city of beer” since one of Croatia's two most popular breweries, Karlovacko brewery, is located here.
