Places you can visit along the way

Quality photo of Zvolen Castle - Slovakia

Zvolen Castle
Slovakia

90 min

What’s most interesting about the Zvolen Castle is not its well preserved Gothic architecture inspired by Italian castles, or the Renaissance reconstruction when the external... fortifications and an entrance gate were added. The most significant fact is that this castle is currently the most extensive gallery in Slovakia as it guards a branch of the Slovak National Gallery. It is home to a large collection of old masters from the 13th to the 21th centuries. Visitors can admire a true wealth of artistic types, themes and styles that combines classic art, with an emphasis on iconography and Gothic art, with contemporary works.

Bear Farm
Hungary

90 min

This bear sanctuary was established in 1998; in 2000 it became home for 18 wolves and in 2010 coaties and raccoons also moved in. The... bears were either once owned by circuses or zoos and got too old for their shows, or pets that got too big. So Bear Farm is a rescue/retirement home where these animals can live safely and in peace in their natural environment. The place also sells honey on site and visitors can feed the bears with a wooden spoon, which is an experience like no other. For more info, please visit: www.medveotthon.hu

The Manor House in Svätý Anton is a must visit when in this area because today this is home to the Museum of History and... Hunting. It was built in 1744 and it features a great collection of artwork, hunting trophies, and antlers as well as original furnishings from the 18th century. Guided tours are offered only in Slovak but English guidebooks are available too. The museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays from November to March, and closed on Mondays from April-June and September-October.

Quality photo of Vac - Hungary

Vac
Hungary

75 min

Considering how small Vac is, it is quite amazing how many great sites it has to offer - starting with the massive 18th century cathedral... with columns on the entry and two clock towers and statues above the front façade; the brilliant Tragor Ignac Museum and finally the Triumphal Arch. If you don't have time to explore them all, even a short walk among the unique mixture of monuments and architectural quirks will be pretty inspiring.

Museum of a Slovak Village
Slovakia

The Museum of the Slovak Village is the largest open-air museum in Slovakia and includes 129 buildings that were brought here from 113 villages. All... these buildings were authentically renovated and 22 are fully furnished and open to public. The genuine ethnographic exhibition provides a valuable insight to traditional building and living culture throughout Slovakia. Visitors will find here a yeoman homestead from 1748, an oil production facility, an inn dating back to 1811, and a wooden Roman-Catholic church from 1792.
