Along its picturesque alleys and... squares stand richly decorated patrician houses, beautiful churches and theaters. Yet, the most impressive sight of Ballinzona is the city’s triple fortification that was built first by the Romans and then extended in the Middle Ages by the Dukes of Lombardy. The oldest and mightiest castle of this fortification is the Castelgrande from where one may enjoy breathtaking views of the Old Town and surrounding area.

The ruins of Mesocco Castle cover the entire top of a small mountain with its irregular pentagon walls. These walls proved unassailable as there were... many attempts to seize the castle in the past, but it was never conquered. The walls connect 5 towers and inside are the remains of the Church of St. Carpoforo. There is another church below the castle, the Church of Santa Maria al Castello, which was first mentioned in the 13th century. It is adorned with well-preserved Late Romanesque frescoes from the workshop of Seregnesi.
