Schattenburg Castle
Austria

The history of this beautiful castle goes way back to the 12th century when it was built by the Earls of Montfort and it remained... in their possession for 200 years. The castle then changed ownership to the mighty Habsburg family. In 1825, the state bought the castle and transformed it into a museum. The museum is divided into several different themed rooms over 3 floors that have been completely restored. Besides the museum, which exhibits everything from historical furniture to period dresses to weapons, the castle features also a restaurant for which advance reservations are recommended.

Quality photo of Franzensfeste Fortress - Italy

Franzensfeste Fortress
Italy

75 min

This truly remarkable, massive defensive system was built by Emperor Francis I of Austria to protect the traffic connection across the Alta Valle Isarco. The... building comprises a giant labyrinth of rooms, corridors and stairways. What’s incredible about it is that it was built in only 5 years, in the period between 1833 and 1838. When Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy made an alliance, Franzensfeste Fortress had lost its strategic importance. There is, however, an assumption that the Nazis hid a hoard of gold stolen from the Bank of Italy in this place in WWII. The fortress today features art exhibits in its halls.

The museum is very informative and interactive, visitors can learn the history of glass making in Switzerland, observe glass being made in the factory, or even blow their own glass. There is also a glass labyrinth that is great fun. The museum was selected as one of the most beautiful museums in Europe in 1996 by the European Council.

A dazzling mix of historical and modern is just one of the features that make Vaduz so attractive. Lucerne owes its magical ambience to many reasons.
