Berchtesgaden – Eagles Nest
Germany

Berchtesgaden Eagles Nest is one of the most interesting remnants from WWII in Germany. It was Hitler’s mountain retreat, a present for his 50th birthday... given to him by the Nazi Party. This chalet stands high above the town, perched on a sheer rock and when weather permits the views of Berchtesgaden area, including the Konigssee and Salzburg surroundings, are incredible. This historic building is a reminder of one man’s crimes against humanity. The only way to access the Eagle’s Nest is via bus and don’t forget that it is open only in summer, from mid May to October, but please check their opening hours at: http://www.berchtesgaden.de/en/eagles-nest

Visitors enter the mine on a mine train and after the fun ride they can slide down one of the two miner’s slides to get to the amazing subterranean salt lake where they can take a silent boat ride. The tour of the mine is both fun and educational as visitors learn all about miners’ lives and the conditions they had to endure while working here.

But the most exciting part that will most certainly thrill any visitor is the historic Falconry Center with daily bird of prey flying show and the first Austrian Falconry Museum. This legendary fortress was also utilized as filming location for the classic Hollywood movie Where Eagles Dare starring Clint Eastwood.
