Orava Castle was initially built in 1241 but continuously rebuilt in the next few... centuries and finally in 1611 got its current appearance. Visitors discover the castle history while touring through many rooms that feature armor, artwork and antiques of the period. But what sets this castle apart from many other medieval castles is the live performance by local actors dressed in period costumes that dance, sing and act in order to fully revive the atmosphere of the 17th century. There is a bit of an effort to get the most stunning views of the village below and the imposing Tatra Mountains as there are approximately 500 stairs to the top of the castle tower.

If you would like to experience the traditional Slovak way of living, than be sure to visit the Museum of Orava Village, an open-air museum... containing over 50 folk buildings. Its five different sections represent Orava’s regions – Lower Orava with large and pretentious structures around the Market Place; Mill features a water mill, sawmill and fulling mill; Zamagurie Region has houses and farmsteads of rich and medium rich farmers; Goral Settlement represents the poorest part of Orava and Zabrez is characterized by the 15th century, Late-Gothic wooden church. The constructions in the museum are mostly originals brought in from different locations in Orava and replicas are made for those which could not be bought or transported here. Orava Village Museum is open to visitors year round and the museum regularly organizes various interesting programs during summer and winter.

Vlkoklinec was granted UNESCO status for the mainly intact folk architecture with artifacts dating back to the 15th century. One might say that in Vlkoklinec... time stands still and the traditional tools, artwork, crafts, and old-style kitchens will immediately take visitors back in past, when life seemed so much simpler. This remarkably untouched settlement consists of 45 wooden houses and outbuildings of which 2 have been converted to museums.
