Sanctuary of Vicoforte
Italy

At the beginning it was just a humble medieval sanctuary. But, according to the legend, in 1590 a hunter accidentally damaged a fresco of the... Madonna and Child which, allegedly, started bleeding. In order to redeem his sins, he left his gun (which is still preserved in the sanctuary) and began collecting money to repair the damage. The news about this miracle spread fast and soon many pilgrims started flocking in. In 1596 the Duke of Savoy commissioned a construction of a larger sanctuary that would be suitable to accommodate the crowds. Today this architectural triumph is the world’s fifth largest dome and home to 6,000 square meters of paintings. It is possible to venture the top of the dome but booking in advance is required.
