Samobor is a picturesque little town with well-preserved medieval architecture in its center. Long history, rich cultural heritage and pristine natural surroundings make it a... preferred getaway destination for Zagreb residents, who come here to enjoy its unique charm, natural beauties, popular restaurants and taverns. Besides the notable sights, such as the churches of St Anastazije and St Mihalja, the chapel of St Ana and the ruin of Samobor Castle, you shouldn’t miss to try a local delicacy called kremsnita - a pastry filled with vanilla custard, for which Samobor is renowned all over Croatia.

Quality photo of Franzensburg - Austria

Franzensburg
Austria

135 min

Unlike other castles, Franzensburg does not dominate its surroundings from hilltop, but it stands in the middle of a lake, thus to access it one... must take a short ferry ride. Franzensburg got its name from its creator, the Emperor Franz II, who in fact built this marvelous edifice as an imitation of medieval castle. Hard to believe, because it seems truly authentic with its dungeon, chapel and coronation room, which all can be viewed. This is all owing to the fact that original medieval architectural features, that today ornate the castle, were collected from monasteries and churches, palaces and town halls throughout the Empire.

Quality photo of Karlovac - Croatia

Karlovac
Croatia

75 min

Karlovac is a city of many nicknames due to its natural and historic features. It is located on the confluence of rivers Kupa, Korana, Mreznica... and Dobra, hence the nickname “city on four rivers” where, consequently, kayaking and rafting are very popular. The Austrians founded Karlovac in 1579 when they built the fortified old town in the shape of a 6-pointed star, hence the nick name “the star”. Unfortunately, not much has left of these great defensive walls that were built to defend the city against the invading Ottoman Empire. But history buffs can still enjoy the 13th century Dubovac Castle, once inhabited by many noble families and army generals as well as the city museum. Finally, it is also known as the “city of beer” since one of Croatia's two most popular breweries, Karlovacko brewery, is located here.
