This whimsical abbey was founded in the late 8th century by a Duke of Bavaria to commemorate the place where his son had been attacked... and killed by a wild boar. It took many centuries for it to gain the appearance it holds today, making it the second largest and certainly one of the most stunning in all of Austria. It houses one of the greatest libraries in Austria and the silver Tassilo chalice which was donated by the very man who founded the church. The Hallwyl Castle was constructed in the 11th century by a lower noble family of the same name which used the next 800 years to... distinguish themselves on the Swiss battlefields, in science, politics as well as business. In the 15th century the castle met its tragic obstruction in a form of Bernese troops but luckily it was quickly rebuilt and made even greater than it was before.
