About Bern
Bern’s Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for its well-preserved medieval buildings dating back to 1191, when the city was founded by the Duke of Zähringer. Although it was destroyed by a huge fire in 1405, half-timbered houses and the characteristic sandstone buildings were gradually rebuilt. The city’s landmarks are the Clock Tower, the Prison Tower, the sculptural fountains from the Renaissance and the Gothic Cathedral which is the tallest in Switzerland and offers the best views of the Old Town. Many bustling street cafes, cultural venues and specialty shops welcome visitors in the capital of Switzerland.
