About Gruyeres Castle
This castle is one of the finest examples of the Savoy’s way of building – it is fortified in a typical square style fashion. In the 16th century the owner’s debts got the better of him which led to the castle falling in the hands of his creditors’ representatives. A few centuries later, it was repurposed as a summer residence and bought by the canton of Fribourg who saw a great potential in it. It was made into a lavish museum to commemorate the medieval stained-glass windows, capes of the Order of the Golden Fleece, majestic paintings by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and of course, the elegant rooms once occupied by only the richest of the country’s kin. There is also a smaller castle of St. German and a museum with the works of Oscar-winning H.R: Giger.
