About Butrint
Archaeological site of Butrint is an authentic delight for those who wish to retrace ancient history. It was inhabited from 50,000 BC up to the 19th century and in that long period it was a Greek colony, a Roman city, a bishopric and by the early 19th century it was a small fishing village. The Greeks left here a large theater that still stands today; the Romans built an aqueduct across the Vivari Channel; in the 5th century AD the Christians founded here fortifications and it became an Episcopal centre. In the beginning of the 19th century Butrint was again extended, this time by Ali Pasha, an Albanian Ottoman ruler who controlled Butrint until its final abandonment. All the ruins that Butrint comprises are proves of the different periods in the city’s development.
