About Benedictine Abbey of St. Paul
The abbey was founded in 1091 and has operated almost continuously to the present day. Typical of Romanesque architecture are the capitals and massive pillars in the cross shaped basilica, while a Gothic vault, containing 44 frescoes by the masters Friedrich and Michael Pacher, was added in 1367. The art collection, with works by Rubens, Holbein, Van Dyck and Kremser Schmidt is displayed in the gallery and medieval gold work and textiles are exhibited in the museum.
