Speyer is worth exploring and makes an interesting day trip destination for so many reasons. The two most notable highlights are the Cathedral of St.Mary and St. Stephen, the first and largest consistently vaulted church in Europe and the Speyer Technik Museum. The Cathedral represents, in historical, artistic and architectural sense, one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in Europe and its four towers and two domes dominate the town of Speyer. This giant church was the burial place of the German kings for almost 300 years. In the square in front of the cathedral’s main portal is an enormous stone bowl with a capacity of 1,560 liters that every new bishop had to fill with wine as a gift to the people. Nothing less impressive is the Technik Museum that features the biggest Space Exhibition in Europe and an extremely rare Buran Space Shuttle, developed during the 1980s.
