This whimsical abbey was founded in the late 8th century by a Duke of Bavaria to commemorate the place where his son had been attacked and killed by a wild boar. It took many centuries for it to gain the appearance it holds today, making it the second largest and certainly one of the most stunning in all of Austria. This breath-taking abbey has preceded all its holy competition in all of the things related to culture, most notably books and learning in all sorts of fields. It houses one of the greatest libraries in Austria and the silver Tassilo chalice which was donated by the very man who founded the church. It is filled with all things Baroque – from vibrant frescoes to stunning tapestries sure to leave you at awe.
